Sukhu, Crumpler Win 2nd Dive BVI 10K in Half Marathon Tune Up

APRIL 30—On Saturday the second and final race of the Dive BVI 10k series was held on Virgin Gorda in honour of the runners and victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy last month.

Runners wore special commemorative bibs with a silhouette of Boston’s skyline and the date of the tragedy, April 15, 2013. The bib also included the message: Runners United to Remember. BVI Runs with you.

The overall winner of the race was Ravi Sukhu in 44:07 minutes.

“I would like to dedicate this win to the victims of the Boston Marathon,” Mr. Sukhu said.

Despite a light rain towards the end of the race and wet road conditions, Mr. Sukhu had no problem running away from the competition. He created the most separation on the Copper Mine Road.

“I found this race a little bit easier because I got familiar with the course last time,” Mr. Sukhu said.

It was his second win in the series and he hopes it will help him for the upcoming VG half marathon on May 18.

“I know everyone is training hard and preparing for the half marathon,” Mr. Sukhu said. “I know for me to win this race again today, I had to be at my best.”

In the Women’s Division, Katrina Crumpler took the top spot in 45:42 minutes. During the previous weekend she won the BVI Triathlon Federation’s Sprint Championships along with her husband in West End, Tortola. However, on Saturday the Crumplers would have to settle for only one win, not two.

“Running is not his strength,” Ms. Crumpler said of her husband who finished in seventh place in the Men's Division. “But swimming is not mine, that is why we make a good team.”

Ms. Crumpler competed in last year’s half marathon and was hoping to get some practice in for this year’s event by competing in the 10k on Saturday. She ran in the top three for most of the race.

“I am not use to being in the front,” Ms. Crumpler said. “Maria Mays would normally be a head of me.”
