Creque, Potgieter Win Second College Classic Series Races

More than 200 runners take off in the 2nd race of the 2013 Highland Spring College Classic Series on Tortola

OCTOBER 15—Two times defending champion Khiry Creque and Julaine Potgieter won their second races in the Highland Spring College Classic Series on Tortola, Saturday.

Creque who led from start to finish, had a time of 11 minutes 34.93 seconds, to finish ahead of Guy Williamson and Tarique “Tweety” Moses.

“I was on pace to run in the 10 minutes race because my run up to the first mile was a low five something,” Creque noted of the looped course. “But, coming back down, I ran into some trouble with the little children. They are young and don’t know any better. I ran into about three of them and it threw me off my rhythm coming back so I just cooled it, because what I lost there, I could not make it back up.”

Potgieter who ran 14:04.08 to finish ahead of Claire Louise Whiley and Kelsha Fortune, had considered not competing. “I didn’t want to run because I have an achilles problem that’s quite severe, but said since I’m here, I said let me go,” she explained. “I realized the faster I went the less my achilles tendon would hurt, so I just ran as fast as I could and I was a minute faster than the last race and I was very surprised.”

The final race of the Virgin Gorda leg  is scheduled for Saturday, while the next race on Tortola is on Oct 26.
