Nelda Huggins Compete in WJC 200m Semis

JULY 26—Nelda Huggins became the second British Virgin Islands female athlete to advance to the semifinal of an IAAF World Jr. Championships sprint event in the territory’s history, when she reached Thursday’s 200m semifinal.

Huggins placed seventh in the semifinal in 24.31 seconds after running 24.03 for   fourth and advanced to the semis in her debut. She was also a semifinalist at the World Youth Championships last year.

Huggins narrowly missed the 100m final on Tuesday by one position as the top 24 performers advanced. She was fourth in her 100m heat in 11.87 seconds.

Kyron McMaster had a non advancing time of 54.21 seconds in the Boys 400m Intermediate Hurdles after placing fourth in his heat on Wednesday morning. He was also a 2013 IAAF World Youth Championships qualifier in the open 400m.

Commonwealth Games

Track and field athletes will begin seeing competition in the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, when their session starts on Sunday. Karene King will contest the Women’s 100m, Keron Stoute will see Decathlon action, Eldred Henry will contest the Shot Put and Ashley Kelly, the 400m.

Chantel Malone will compete in the Long Jump while Henry will also see action in the Discus Throw.
