Run At Carifta Games Medals Start This Afternoon

BIRD ROCK, St. Kitts--April 4: With two athletes advancing to finals, the BVI will begin making its run at medals in the 44th Carifta Games here in Bird Rock, St. Kitts, at the Silver Jubilee Stadium, which on Sunday will be renamed in honor of spring icon Kim Collins who won the IAAF World Championships 100m in 2003.

Kala Penn was the first to see action following Friday night's opening session that had limited events when she had a leap of 11.47m (+4.4 mps) on her second attempt to place sixth in the U18 Girls Triple Jump.

This morning, Kyron McMaster was third in his U20 Boys 400m Intermediate Hurdles heat in 54.43 seconds to claim one of the automatic spots to Sunday's final.

Debutants Lakeisha "Mimi" Warner and Jonel Lacey will run in the U20 Girls 400m Hurdles on Sunday afternoon before McMaster's race.

Saturday afternoon session will see several athletes in action. Penn will be joined by Arianna Hayde in the U18 Girls Long Jump with Hayde taking up the Javelin Throw an hour after the Long Jump starts. Last year, she competed in the Heptathlon, which also included both events.

L'Tisha "Bella Fahie will face the starter's gun in the U18 Girls 100m as well as Taylor Hill and Nelda Huggins in the U20 Girls Division.

The BVI got great news during Friday morning's Technical Meeting when the rule stopping 13 and 14 year olds was abandoned allowing Beyonce DeFreitas to compete. Because the ruling came late, she did not run the 400m prelims last night, but will see 200m action tomorrow morning along with Fahie, Hill and Huggins.

DeFreitas will team up with Fahie, Penn and Zacharia "Zakie" Frett to run the U18 Girls 4x100m Relay on Sunday, where the BVI won bronze last year with Huggins on the squad.
