JUNE 30 Karene King came up .06 seconds short of qualifying for the August 22-30 IAAF World Championships 200m in Beijing, China, as three BVI athletes came up victorious in the B section of the weekend Trinidad and Tobago National Track and Field Championships at the Hasley Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.
King won the B final in 23.26 seconds just .02 off her personal best. She was followed by Ashley Kelly, who chopped her five year old personal best from 23.49 seconds to 23.36. Taylor Hill was fourth in 24.63 just ahead of USVI’s Allison Peter’s 24.68. Kelly bested King in the prelims, 23.74-23.79, with Hill also advancing after her 25.06 time.
Veteran sprinter Tahesia Harrigan-Scott ran 11.46 seconds to win the 100m B final on Saturday night. Hill was third in 11.93. Harrigan-Scott ran 11.64 to win her preliminary heat and 11.52 for third in the semis. Hill went 11.96 for third in her heat and sixth in her semi in 11.92.
Earlier in the competition, Kelly was second in her heat and third overall in the 400m in 53.76 seconds on Saturday, after 54.53 in the prelims.
Winds of .04 over the allowable 2.0 meters per second, robbed Chantel Malone of a season’s best in winning the Long Jump with a leap of 6.51 on Sunday. She had a legal best leap of 6.41m on her second attempt.
In the Bahamas’ national championships, Khari Herbert missed winning the 400m consolation final by .03 seconds when he finished in 46.53 seconds. He ran 46.81 to advance to the final.
