Nelda Huggins Win 3rd Straight U17 Girls 100m National Title

MARCH 9—Top Notch Track Club’s Nelda Huggins notched her third straight U17 Girls 100m National Jr. Championships crown on Friday night, during the Carifta Games Trials.

The 2011 Carifta Games bronze medalist, who added silver to her collection last year, had a winning time of 11.90 seconds. The race had a 0.9 wind reading. Sprint Tech Track Club’s quarter miler Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses and teammate L’Tisha “Lea” Fahie, recorded personal best times of 12.33 and 12.34, in second and third respectively.

Huggins, 16, ran 12.13 to win heat one while Moses won heat two in 12.34.

In the U20 Girls’ race, the way the season has been going can best be described as trading places. Top Notch Track Club’s Shaian Vandenburg became the National Champion, when she bested the Sprint Tech Track Club duo of Taylor Hill and Jonel Lacey, to win in 12.08 seconds. Hill was second in 12.09 followed by Lacey in 12.18.

Lacey won last week’s matchup in the Rey O’Neal Fast Times—which concluded the Gatorade Development Series—by edging Hill with Vandenburg taking third. Hill was the winner in the race before that with two straight wins over Vandenburg, who seized the season opener.

Already with an 800m qualifier and a season’s best of 2 minutes, 11.81 seconds to her credit, Sprint Tech Track Club’s Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner, ran 56.69 in the 400m.

Kala Penn backed up last week’s 11.45m Triple Jump leap with an 11.40m jump in the U17 Girls event.

The Shot Put finals as well as the 200m heats are scheduled for 9:45 a.m. and 10:10 respectively. The afternoon session begins at 4 p.m. and includes the Long Jump and Discus Throw finals, as well as the 200, 400 and 800m finals and the conclusion of the Pentathlon.
