AUGUST 5—The BVI Athletics Association kicked off its Kiddies Athletics Program Summer Camp in Capoons Bay on Aug 1, with several enthusiastic youngsters between 4 and 14 years in attendance.

The inaugural camp is being run in conjunction with First District Representative Hon. Andrew Fahie.

“Definitely it was a fund filled day,” beamed BVI Athletics Association Vice President Steve Augustine and IAAF Certified Lecturer who’s leading the course, after recovering from running the obstacle course in 27.4 seconds, then looked on as youngsters improved his time. “The kids who were here, if you speak with them, you’ll get the same response. They definitely had a really good time.”

The camp continues Thursday-Saturday following August Festival activities with a full week from Aug 12-17, ending with a mini track meet. Activities run from 4-6 p.m. daily.

At the camp, Augustine was joined by BVIAA General Secretary Delva Thomas, Chief Coach Dag Samuels. Coaches Karl “Dub” Scatliffe, Rhennie Phipps were also in attendance along with National Youth 800m record holder and IAAF World Youth Championships Medley Relay silver medalist Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner and World Youth participant Kyron McMaster. Sprinter Kaetia Maduro also contributed to the program.

“We are going to have different people coming to the camp and we will introduce the children to the different faces involved in athletics,” Augustine explained. “That way they get to know who the people are and they get more involved—that’s what we are all about—introducing the kids to athletics, increasing their comfort level with athletics and building the sport from the ground up.”

On opening day, Augustine said participants were introduced to the concepts of Javelin Throw, Discus Throw, ball toss and using a sprint ladder an obstacle course with miniature hurdles.
