David Ahlmeyer: Why I Chose Furman

What was the deciding factor in your decision to choose Furman?

The deciding factor for me was my individual fit and feeling about Furman. I felt like I fit in well with the team and school, and left campus with a very positive view. I prayed about it and talked to my parents and coach, and all of those people supported me and gave me great advice.

What impressed you on your visit?
I was impressed by the resources the team had and the campus. As my dad put it, if you want to be a good distance runner, Furman has every possible resource to get you there. The campus also lived up to its reputation as being beautiful.

How did you like the coaches?
I really connected with the coaches. Coach Neal and Coach Gary are both great guys who have experience at the highest level. I trust that they can get me to any level of running I want to go to.

What's your favorite thing about Furman?
My favorite part of Furman is definitely the team. All the guys and girls on the team were very genuine and nice. The team has tons of talent on it and has very big goals, which I am excited to help work towards them.

Have you decided on a major?
I have not decided on a specific major, but I will probably focus on something math related, like accounting.

What goals do you have for the track season?
My goals for the track season are to continue to improve and have fun with my teammates. I want to win my first individual state title, along with setting new PRs. My time goals are sub-2, sub-4:10, and sub-8:50.

What other schools did you consider?
I looked at a lot of schools across the country, but focused in on 4 schools: Furman, N.C. State, Virginia, and Georgetown. All of these schools have great programs and academics, and I am thankful to have been able to experience them.

What was the most important factor you considered in making your decision?
There wasn't one big factor I was looking for. I was looking for a good school with a nationally competitive program, preferably in the southeast and fairly close to home. Furman checked all these boxes for me.
