Trevia Gumbs Bags Carifta Games Shot Put Silver

Trevia Gumbs unleashes her Shot Put Throw (3K) of 13.47m

BERMUDA, APRIL 8—Trevia Gumbs picked up a silver medal during this morning’s second day of the LIME Carifta Games in Devonshire, Bermuda.

Her medal brings the territory’s total to three matching the 2006 and 2007 medal haul. The 2007 medals were one gold and two silver.

Trevia joined her twin sister Tynelle who won the U17 Girls Javelin Throw gold—becoming the first siblings to seize Carifta Games medals—and Nelda Huggins in the U17 Girls 100m.

Gumbs grabbed the lead in the 3K implement—which is being used for the first time as opposed to the 4K—when she opened with a heave of 13.25m. She fouled her next attempt before getting a throw out to 13.47m to extend her lead.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Chelsea James snatched the lead from Gumbs in the fourth round with a toss of 13.66m, while Gumbs followed with a long throws over 14m but landed just outside the sector as she brought her hands to her face in disbelief with the foul.

James unleashed a fifth round throw, becoming the first to crack the 14m barrier with that 14.02m heave.

Gumbs’ response was another long throw, but that too was a foul before closing her series with a 13.33m throw.

Brandon Andrew began competing in the 2-day Boys Heptathlon by attacking the 110m Hurdles for the first time in his career and ran 15.93 seconds to place third in his heat and collected 741 points. His time moved him to No. 3 on the All Time Top 10 list.

He followed up with a 6.24m leap in the Long Jump for 639 points and positioned himself in a three way tie for fourth after two of the seven events. He’ll contest the Shot Put and 200m this afternoon. Tomorrow, Andrew will wind up with the Javelin Throw, High Jump and the 1500m.
