Chantel Malone Moves Closer to Olympic Games Qualifier

Chnatel Malone lowered her 400m season's best to 53.07, which is .072 off the Olympic Games qualifier

APRIL 16—Competing on her home turf at the Texas Invitational, Chantel Malone was third in her heat and finished third overall in the 400m with a season’s best time of 53.07 seconds, .72 off her best and the London Olympic Games B qualifying standard of 52.35.

The weekend also saw all of the territory’s top athletes competing in Miami, California and Maryland.

Although wind aided (2.1 mps) Malone ran her third successive 200m under 23.70 seconds, after placing third in her heat in 23.68, the 11th best time of the meet.

In Miami, Karene King ran a 200m personal best of 23.72 seconds—lowering last year’s 23.86—to finish fourth in her heat and 11th overall, at the Miami Invitational. In the same race, Ashley Kelly opened her season with 23.98 for seventh and the 15th best mark of the meet.

Returning from a slight injury, Tahesia Harrigan-Scott began her season in the 200m with a seventh place showing of 24.49, the 17th best mark of the competition.

Samantha John ran a season’s best 56.80 in the 400m, which was the 18th best time in the event.

Sanya Penn ran 12.07 in the 100m to win her heat and ranked 18th overall.  

The 4x100m relay team of Harrigan-Scott, Kelly, King and Penn, ran 45.08 to place third—which was the second fastest time ever run by a senior team.  

On the men’s side, Khiry Creque ran an 800m personal best of 1 minute 59.43 seconds to finish sixth ahead of Raheem “Ras” Taylor’s season’s best of 1:59.47.

Tehymall Huggins was third in his 400m heat in 52.26 seconds and J’Moi Penn was fifth after running 56.88. Their marks were 28 and 33rd overall.

At the Mondo Invitational held at Sacramento State, Portland State Sr. Dominique Maloney, was second in her 400m heat and fourth overall in 56.41 seconds, a time that moved her to No. 2 on the Vikings all time list. Maloney anchored the 4x400m Relay to a fourth place finish, where they ran 3 minutes, 48.94 seconds.

At the ACCAC Mesa Classic in Mesa, Arizona, versatile Keron Stoute had a busy day competing in six events. After leding off the 4x100m relay that ran 40.19 to qualify for next month’s NJCAA Championships, he took to the field and produced the following results.

Long Jump: seventh, 6.47m (21’2¾”); 2nd in High Jump, 1.97m (6’5½”). 11th Shot Put, 10.36m (34.0”). 4th in Javelin Throw, 45.53m (149’4”). 16th in Discus Throw, 31.82m (104’5”).

His teammate Kanishque “Kadi” Todman, returning to competition from an injury, was ninth in the Long Jump with a leap of 4.79m (15’8¾”)
