Chantel Malone Kicking Off BVI’s World Championships Competition

MOSCOW, August 9—Long Jumper Chantel Malone will be the first of a record three British Virgin Islands athletes—all female—competing in the 14th IAAF World Athletics Championships in Moscow, Russia, to see action.

Malone—in her second successive championships—will see action on Saturday night in the opening day of competition that runs through Aug 18. She has a season’s best leap of 6.65m, which improved her previous best and National Record of 6.56m. 

Malone will be the last of the 15 jumpers in Group A seeing action. The event starts at 11:20 a.m. Eastern Caribbean time.

Veteran Tahesia Harrigan-Scott—who has competed in previous championships in 2005, 2007 and 2009—will run in the 100m prelims on Sunday morning. She was a 2009 semifinalist.

Karene King—who rounds out the field—will make her championships debut n the 200m on Aug 15.
