Creque Sets Pace as College Race Opens With Record 250 Participants

One Milers got the 18th Highland Spring College Classic Series off and running on Saturday

SEPTEMBER 23—Two times defending champion Khari Creque repelled the surging Guy Williamson to win the opener of the 18th Highland Spring College Classic Series Saturday on Tortola, which began with a record 250 participants.

Creque—who’s aiming to take down Lyndell Roberts’ 16-year old course record of 10 minutes and 45.3 seconds from November 20, 1997—opened his campaign with 11 minutes 25.47 seconds. Williamson followed in 11:38.08 with University of the Virgin Islands debutant Isaiah Hortsford next in 12:06.87.

“The race itself felt good,” Creque noted. “I got out, settled in then came under a lot of pressure from Guy Williamson, a really good runner. He pushed me harder on the return because normally, when I’m coming back, I’d relax and save something for the last 400m. I saw he was close so I slightly increased the pace to increase separation.”

Creque is satisfied with his opening time and noted he ran 10:56 last year at season’s end. “The aim this year is to probably run in the nine minutes,” he said. “I’m eyeing the record. Last year, I started off with 12:30, this year is 11:25, so I’m on good pace.”

Coach Dale Joseph said he brought the UVI athletes to Tortola to see how they would perform under pressure and it was the first time some of them were racing. “I wanted to see how they fared, their basic running style and how I could make adjustments with them,” Joseph explained. “We’re trying to build a program at UVI and these guys looked really good as far as a starter program is concerned.”

When asked about the difficulty in getting the program off at UVI, Joseph a former athlete said it’s a challenge based on the quantity and quality of athletes they have.

“We have a few who are transfer students and utilize them to the best of our ability, but they are only there just for a time,” he noted. “The more home grown athlete is a little more difficult to groom. Hopefully, this will be a start and we can move on from there.”

Joseph said Horsford’s third place performance shows he has stamina and speed and he can be developed over the long haul. “I’m really anxious to get back and work on a program for him and the others and getting Horsford closer to the front in the next couple races,” he said, noting that Sergio Barbel was 13th in 14:01.30, and John Nemith 14th in 14:01.69.

Race director Stephanie Russ Penn was delighted with the turnout. “It was an exciting Saturday morning, 250 strong,” she reflected. “It was just awesome getting there and seeing the crowds of persons then the race got underway and it was exciting from beginning to end.”
