Creque Snatches Highland Spring College Classic Series 3-Peat

Khiry Creque leads from start to finish to repeat as Highland Spring College Classic Series Champion

NOVEMBER 19—While he didn’t meet his goal of challenging the 16 year old course record nor getting under the 11 minutes barrier, Khiry Creque joined Linden Peters and Steven Asson as the only 3-peat champions in the 18-year history of the Highland Spring College Classic Series, when he pulled off the feat on Saturday, as the curtains came down on the 2013 edition.

Creque—who had hoped to challenge Lyndell Roberts’ 16-year old course record of 10 minutes 45.3 seconds from 1997—was timed in a season’s best 11:23.22.

Tarique “Tweety” Moses followed Creque in 11:32.34, while University of the Virgin Islands’ Isaiah Horsford, who ran 11:34.55, was third, slicing more than 30 seconds from his season opening run.

Julaine Potegiter had an unbeaten run through the series and won her first title, after covering the 2-mile loop in 14:32.69. Kay Reddy finished second in 15:33.19. Anna Kinkead ran 15:50.69, to place third.

Pushed to the line by teammate Jahtivya Williams in a photo finish, A’Keela McMaster who went undefeated in the Girls One Mile division, took down Renee Clarence’s seven year old record of 7 minutes and 15 seconds from Nov 4, 2006, when she ran 7:09.60. Williams was second in the same time with Tenisha Herbert third in 7:50.09.

Cedar School’s Derek Pettigrew won his second successive Most Outstanding Primary Schools Cross Country award with another victory in the series finale. He ran 13 minutes, 19.68 seconds on October 26 to wipe out the 14:01.67 mark established by Francis Lettsome Primary School’s Brendon Fahie, on November 26, 2006.

On the female side, Althea Scatliffe Primary School’s Alisha Hayde also went through the series unbeaten to land Most Outstanding Girls Cross Country laurels. In the process, Hayde chopped 25 seconds off Francis Lettsome’s Marika Potter’s 15 minutes and 40.55 seconds time from Nov 21, 2006 when she stopped the clock at 15:15.29, on October 26, for the new record.

The Rotary Club of Tortola continued their dominance in the service clubs Cross Country division, with their ninth successive victory.

Race director Stephanie Russ Penn said she was pleased with the 2013 edition. “Of course there are always thing you can improve on but, generally speaking, the participants have been very enthusiastic and they have looked forward to the races with great anticipation,” she noted. “They have come out, shown great camaraderie and it has been a delight to really organize this event and to see the joy that it brings to so many different persons.”
