Nelda Huggins, 2nd left, dips under 12.00 in 100m to highlight BVIAA Development meet
FEBRUARY 9—After a pedestrian effort last week, National Jr. Record holder and 2013 Carifta Games U17 Girls 100m silver medalist Nelda Huggins shifted gears and ran her fastest century of the season to highlight Friday night’s BVI Athletics Association sixth Development Series meet.
The Top Notch Track Club athlete who last week qualified in the 200m for the IAAF World Jr. Championships scheduled for this summer, came within .07 of qualifying for a second event when she ran 11.97 seconds.
Sprint Tech Track Club’s L’Tisha “Lea” Fahie was second in 12.30, in the race into a -1.1 wind reading with teammate Dominique Maloney third in 12.31.
On the men’s side, Mark Kendall edged his Top Notch teammate J’Maal Alexander by .02 in the 100m 10.83-10.85.
Shot Put Bests
Fast Lane Track Club’s Kadeon Potter and Sprint Tech Track Club’s Dekoya Hodge, set personal bests in the Shot Put. Potter heaved the U18 Boys 5K ball 13.76m while Hodge had a mark of 12.24m with the 3K weight in the U18 Girls class.
Triple Jump bests
Kala Penn and Niayla Smith became the first two athletes to jump over 11m in the same Triple Jump competition. Penn bounded out to 11.57m and Smith upped her measurement from 10.76 to 11.02—to become the territory’s eight athlete over the 11.00m mark.
2nd Development Meet held in Capoons Bay
A small pool of athletes turned out for Saturday’s BVIAA 7th Development Series meet in Capoons Bay on Saturday, targeting U9-U13 athletes.
