The Scoop: Juicy Races, Statement Making Results And Program Defining Wins

3. Say Hello To One Of California's New Elites, Justin Hazell

Let's not call this an upset. El Camino Real Senior (California) High's Justin Hazell was no pushover, considering he finished fourth at last year's CIF Division I cross country championships in 15:10.70.

But was he the favorite at this year's Woodbridge Cross Country Classic sweepstakes race?

That's debatable.

Either way, Hazell earned the biggest win of his career on Saturday, dropping his first 3-mile time under 14 minutes at a new Woodbridge course to win in 13:59.50.

Hazell's previous best at the distance, coincidentally, came last year at Woodbridge, where he went 14:32.60 to finish 10th overall.

Perhaps Hazell can now set his sights on much grander ambitions -- winning a state title, qualifying for Foot Locker Nationals, and earning a bid to NXN.

Saturday may have been the start of much greater things for the senior.
