APRIL 11—In the first of two tune-ups for the May 12 inaugural Dive BVI Half Marathon, Maria Mays returned to the roads for the first time this season and claimed Saturday’s Dive BVI 10K race, shaking off veteran Zebalon McLean, who was overtaken by homeboy Maxford Pipe for second.

Mays and McLean renewed their rivalry and ran side by side for much of the race, before he faded then Mays held off Pipe and went on to the victory in 42 minutes and 58 seconds. Pipe was second in 43:10 with McLean finishing in 44.37.

“Zebalon is absolutely brilliant during the first eight kilometres of every race,”  said Mays who is a better hill climber. “He always just hits a wall and I can just edge him out.”
