Trevia Gumbs in the process of unleashing her silver medal throw on her fourth attempt
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador, JULY 2— Carifta Games Shot Put silver medalist Trevia Gumbs, wrapped up the BVI’s performances at the XIX Central American and Caribbean Jr. Track and Field Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador on Sunday, with a National Record throw and a silver medal—the territory’s second silver in the competition—and 15th overall since 1992.
Jonel Lacey and Khari Herbert were fourth respectively, in the U18 Girls and Boys’ 400m on the final day of the 3-day competition.
Gumbs, who took a short lived lead over the field on her second attempt before Jamaica’s Gleneve Grange unleashed a mammoth 15.04m (49’4) toss later in the same round to snatch gold, reached 14.75 (48’4¾”) on her fourth attempt for the silver. In the process, she avenged a loss to Carifta Games champ Chelsea James of Trinidad and Tobago, who finished with the bronze after a 13.93m (45’8½”) heave.
Lacey ran 57.21 seconds for fourth in the 400m final, after a 57.44 semifinal during the morning session.
Herbert ran a strong race from lane one to finish .24 seconds from the podium with his fourth place finish in 48.45. He advanced to the final after running 49.01.
Kyron McMaster had a non-advancing time of 50.84 in his heat.
Brandon Andrew narrowly missed the U18 Boys 110m Hurdles final, but settled for a National Scholastic Record time of 14.91 seconds.
Kala Penn was sixth in the U18 Girls Triple Jump, after cutting the sand at 11.04m (36’2¾”).
