Britney Wattley Sprints to MEAC Championships 100m Crown

Britney Wattley recorded personal bests of 11.60 and 23.67 in the 100 and 200m at the 2012 MEAC Outdoor Championships

MAY 6—Morgan State Jr. Britney “Brito” Wattley had a career day on Saturday in Greensboro, North Carolina, in helping her team to a fourth place finish in the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

She became the 10th BVI athlete since 1979 to win a Collegiate Conference title when she raced to a 100m personal best, then turned in another career mark for fourth in the 200m, helping Morgan State to accumulate 80.5 points.

Wattley chopped her 11.79 seconds personal best from April 6 in Gainesville, Florida, to finish on top the MEAC 100m pile in 11.60, moving from No. 5 to No. 3 on the territory’s All Time List.

Wattley advanced to the final after finishing third in her heat in 11.92 seconds into a -3.3 headwind during Friday’s prelims.

She followed up her 100m victory with a fourth place finish in the 200m after stopping the clock at 23.67 seconds—a personal best—and the fourth fastest legal time ever run by a BVI female. On Thursday, Wattley advanced to the 200m final, when she dipped under the 24.00 seconds barrier for the first time in her career, winning her heat in 23.88 seconds with a .09 mps tailwind.

Heading into the MEAC Championships she had a windy 24.22 in her last outing after running an outdoor best of 24.52 in Tallahassee, Florida, last month. Wattley has run her fastest 200m times this season since 2008, in the process of  winning the Elmore Stoutt High School Victrix Ludorum , when she ran 24.55 seconds.

Wattley anchored the 4x100m relay to through a victorious 44.93 seconds and brought home the 4x400m stick in seventh place in its heat and 12th overall in 3:48.11, helping Morgan State to accumulate 80.5 points.
