And they're off in the start of the 2012 Highland Spring College Classic Series
SEPTEMBER 17—Defending champion Khiry Creque and his Sprint Tech Track Club teammate Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner, were the respective male and female winners in Saturday’s Highland Spring College Classic Series opener that kicked off with 215 participants.
“This first race was OK I would say and I’ve been training good,” stated Creque after breaking the tape in 12 minutes, 22.28 seconds. “The body is hurting a little but I came out and did my best.”
Creque said his aim was to keep his conditioning up as he began his title defense.
“With the condition I’m in now, as long as I stay healthy, a low 10 minutes I’m looking for,” he pointed out. “That’s the time I’m looking for. Last year I ran 11 flat. This year, I’m looking for 10 minutes.”
Pressed by her teammate Tarika “Tinker Belle” Moses, Warner said she knew it was going to be a hard race. “I was expecting pain going up but coming back was easy,” she noted. “After I came on the flat, it was like I couldn’t go anymore, but I did.”
What is she looking forward to from the series? “Last year, I did this series and it really helped my season,” noted Warner lowered the 800m National Youth Record to 2 minutes, 10.92 seconds when she beat Guadeloupe’s Cheryl Farial in an epic battle during the Leeward Islands Jr. Championships. “So, I’m expecting it to do a lot for my endurance runs in the next season.”
Time wise, Warner who was also celebrating her 15th birthday on Saturday, said she’s looking for a time in the 11-minute range by season’s end on November 10. “I don’t know what the ending will be but certainly something in the 11s should be good for me,” she said.
Creque she noted had been discussing race strategy and the pain she’ll go through and how to approach the incline towards the one mile turnaround. “He has definitely been helpful for me,” she noted.
With 215 participants kicking off the event, race director Stephanie Russ Penn said it has its own identity within the community.
“We are in our 17th year and the series itself has pretty much developed who it is,” she noted. “I can only ask that it continues on the same kind of strength as it has been, in terms of being that community activity that persons look forward to and are eager to come out and participate. The buzz has begun for the series here and in Virgin Gorda.”
The Virgin Gorda leg of the series begins at 7 a.m. on Saturday.
