College Classic Series Ends With Fast Times And a Tie

Lakeisha "Mimi" Warner, left and her Sprint tech Track Club teammate Tarika "Tinker Bell" Moses, collect some of their co-champs awards from HLSCC's Deborah Hodge

NOVEMBER 13—Tarika “Tinker Bell” Moses grabbed a lead she would never relinquish and finished eight overall, as the 17th Highland Spring College Classic Series ended on Saturday, in Paraquita Bay.

Moses had a time of 13 minutes, 16.7 seconds, that allowed her to tie her Sprint Tech Track Club teammate Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner, who was second in 13:49.1 for the women’s division title, as both ended the series with three points.

“My goal was to run a faster race and place high,” Moses who ran 13:10 as the second fastest all time performer in her last outing said. “My plan was to go out hard because I didn’t want to lose contact with some of the guys in the pack, because if you fell off the pace, you wouldn’t catch up. So, the best thing was to go our hard and keep the pace on the return leg.”

Warner said she almost fell coming out of the start, which broke her mental strength. “When I saw how far how far everybody had gone, I kind of give up—something I have to work on mentally to stay strong even when I don’t feel at my best—so that’s what broke me down in the race,” she explained. “Therefore, I didn’t do my best in this race.”

Warner, 15, said the finale was the only one of the four races she wasn’t pleased with, but noted her fastest times came in the first two races. “The first three were better to me that this one,” she said. “Next series, I want to at least go under 13 minutes because I didn’t go under 13 this year so that’s my goal to go under 13 by a good much. I was expecting it this year, so now that’s my goal.”

Khiry Creque ran a personal best of 10:58.7—the fifth runner under 11 minutes in series history—en route to repeating as overall champion.

The Rotary Club of Tortola won their eight successive Service Clubs Cross Country division title. Cedar School won the Primary and Secondary Schools

Race director Stephanie Russ Penn, described the final competitive race ahead of the Nov 24 race for a cause as excellent. “Despite the rains making it seem as if it wouldn’t have happened but we would have run anyway, the times were excellent. Khiry Creque ran under 11 minutes and was gearing for Lyndell Roberts’ course record (10:45.3) he’s very close so I hope he’s get it next year because it’s a long standing record,” she noted of the mark that dates back to 1997. He’s our overall champion and he did an awesome job.”

The race director said the women’s was competitive between the two Under 17s, Lakeisha “Mimi” Warner and Tarika “Thinker Bell” Moses. “They are two up and coming outstanding and promising track and field runners. I look forward to seeing them in the track season coming out of this Cross Country season and the times they have been running,” she noted. “Both ran very close to 12 minutes this year and that can only mean good things when track comes around. But overall, it was an excellent series.”
