BVI athlets will get a tune up for the CAC Jr. Championships during the Leeward Islands Jr. Championships
MAY 22—At least six Carifta Games individual medalists and numerous finalists from the sub region will renew their rivalries on June 9-10, when the BVI Athletics Association hosts the Leeward Islands Jr. Championships.
The championships are being staged for the first time since they were last held here in 2008 and will mark the final home meet of the 2012 season.
Teams from Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat and the U.S. Virgin Islands, will tackle the BVI on home turf. The competition will also see competitors from out side the sub region in some events.
While BVI athletes won four individual medals at this year’s Carifta Games, athletes from Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda also bagged medals at the regional showcase event that targets Under 17 and Under 20 athletes—the same divisions for the Leeward Islands Jr. Championships. Antigua had seven Carifta finalists.
Competition will be run over two sessions, beginning at 9:30 a.m. each day with the finals slated for 3 p.m. Some field events will have their finals in the morning. Admission to the morning session is $3 and $5 for the afternoon session.
The sub region athletes will be using the meet as a tune up for the June 27-July 1, CAC Jr. Championships in El Salvador. Athletes who haven’t already done so, will also be seeking to qualify for the July 10-15, IAAF World Jr. Championships in Barcelona, Spain.
