OCTOBER 23—Fresh off their battle in the October 6 NACAC 10K Series where they were third and fourth respectively, Steven Asson and James Carr went at it again on Saturday afternoon in race four of the Ceres Juices 10K Series on Beef Island.

On the third of three laps, Asson opened a slight lead. By time they reached the turnaround on the way to Minnie’s Plants, Carr had shifted gears to drive pass Asson, then hanged on for a 17 seconds victory, to finish in 40 minutes, 46 seconds. Asson was timed in 41:03.

“My tactic was to run really, really fast and don’t die. I managed it—but it was really tough and I won, which I’m actually happy about,” Carr said after his victory. “The first two laps Steve and I were neck and neck. I knew I had a little in the tank, but I also knew I didn’t have too much so I broke away a little earlier than I thought I would but I wanted to ensure the victory. I think I paid the price for breaking away that bit early.”

Asson said Carr made a smart move when he surged and he couldn’t respond.

“I had stitches but that’s not the issue,” he said. “It was his day so you have to give the man what belongs to him.”

Maria Mays—coming off finishing 40th among women and in the top 230 participants in the 11,000 Baltimore Half Marathon field—won the women’s race in 43:16. The preparations is part of her plan to tackle Meriel Steadman’s BVI Half Marathon course record of 1 hour 34 minutes and 09 seconds established last year. She ran 1:35.08 in Baltimore.

“My legs felt a little bit from the race in Baltimore and that’s reflected in my time, but, I’m delighted,” Mays stated. “With this win, I clinched the ladies victory, so now I can celebrate.”
